Woodturning Gallery (set up June 2009)

For years we have wanted to try our hand at Woodturning, but didn't have the means or the tools. Then, out of the blue, we had two lathes donated to us. We couldn't believe our luck, so we set about finding out how to do it.
We purchased a number of books to guide us through the learning curve and Barbara was lucky enough to have a day's lesson with Carlyn Lindsay, a renowned wood-turner living locally.

After this there was no holding us back, and we started to organise our workshop. The necessary tools such as Bandsaw and Grinding Wheels came fairly quickly. We had a set of chisels/tools donated to us with one of the lathes and a few bowl blanks to make a start on.

At the time we were clearing some of our land and we were able to collect a lot of 'wet' wood, particularly Plum, Hawthorn, Holly and Oak. These were all ideal to practice on and we were soon trying our hand at turning almost anything that we felt interested in.
The process continued with buying lots of seasoned wood from local wood yards and shows. We now have a mountain of wood to work with and you can see some of our results here:  A Family selection of Woodturnings:
